Rohnert Park Man Pleads To Attempted Kidnapping For Copeland Creek Trail Assault
Santa Rosa, CA – January 16, 2015 – District Attorney Jill Ravitch announced today that defendant Nicholas Sterba, 19-years-old of Rohnert Park, pled no contest to the charge of attempted kidnapping today in front of the Honorable Rene Chouteau.
District Attorney Ravitch stated, “This is disturbing criminal behavior. It was an unprovoked attack on an unsuspecting victim. People using paths and trails are reminded to always be mindful of your surroundings, and consider traveling with a buddy.”
The charge resulted from an assault on a female jogger on the Copeland Creek Trail on August 25, 2014. The young woman was wearing headphones and completing her jog at approximately noon when suddenly the defendant grabbed her from behind. The woman elbowed and fought with Sterba. She broke his grip and he fled the scene. Sterba was apprehended the following week when he was observed on the same trail by Rohnert Park Police who had increased their patrols of the area.
The defendant entered into an open plea and will be sentenced on February 27, 2015 by the Honorable Rene Chouteau. Sterba faces up to four years in the state prison. Further, he is subject to increased penalties for certain future offenses as attempted kidnapping is a “violent felony” and constitutes a strike offense under the state’s three-strike law.
The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Chris Honigsberg. Sergeant Jeff Justice of the Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety headed the investigation.
